Simply a must read for those seeking hope and accountability in their creative pursuits. A loving kick in the pants for those of us that sometimes loose sight of the reasons art is worth pursuing and a reminder that it's work, that labor is involved in "Provoking the muse" and that it's our job to show up with discipline and vigor even when we loose sight of the goal or just don't feel like it. If it doesn't feel a bit like work, it might be you need something more challenging or it might be that you are not provoking enough "Resistance".
Marketing is not the same as advertising, marketing is more than interrupting people with your message or slapping your name on a billboard. Marketing is, as Seth Godin sees it, a way of sharing with the people who care the most the difference you seek to make and the way you or your organization can make the world a better place. I Believe that for creative people marketing is perhaps our most powerful tool outside of our work itself, when you are on the fringes finding those who might love what you are making, or convincing a skeptic to give it a chance are paramount to earning your audience.
This incredibly detailed account exposes the fascinating complexities of not only the first years of Barack Obama's presidency but his identity and how it shaped his decisions. Regardless of my own opinions, both critical and celebratory of Obama as president, 'A Promised Land' illustrates someone with a clear vision of what they believe the Unites States stands for and what potentials await in a possible future where those ideals are realized, it is the realization of those ideals in the face of impossibly difficult decisions that face any worthy president and I now have much more empathy for those who serve in this position than ever before.
